Mumbai residents are finally experiencing a breath of fresh air after weeks of heavy smog and poor visibility. On 28 February 2026, the city’s overall air quality index (AQI) was enhanced to 56, placing it in the satisfactory category. In addition, this highlights a significant recovery from the polluted situations that have enveloped the city for much of the past month.

Today’s weather conditions attribute the improvement to clear skies, slightly warm temperatures, and dry conditions, which assisted in dispersing lingering pollutants. The recorded temperature ranges from 22°C to 32°C, making it favourable conditions for cleaner air.

This change not only enhances visibility but also makes outdoor activities safer for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and people with respiratory issues.

AQI readings varied across different parts of Mumbai and its suburbs. Mulund is recorded as the cleanest air at an impressive 23AQI, providing residents a welcome relief. On the other hand, areas such as Andheri East (75), Deonar (82), and Kurla (99) saw air quality within the satisfactory to moderate range. Suburban areas such as Thane (74), Kalyan (60), and Navi Mumbai (67) also benefited from the improvement, making the air quality healthier for day-to-day commuters and outdoor workers.

Authorities and environmental experts point out that the improvement comes after months of heavy pollution, when smog frequently reduced visibility and led to “moderate” to “poor” AQI levels across the city. As per reports, the pollution was mainly caused by vehicle emissions, industrial activity, and construction dust, linked with stagnant air scenarios that trapped pollutants in the city’s atmosphere.

For the moment, Mumbaikars are enjoying clearer skies and fresher air, offering a much-needed break from the smog that had dominated headlines for weeks. While the city may still face issues with seasonal pollution, the enhancement delivers hope and relief for a healthier climate.
