January 25 is celebrated as National Voters Day in India. This year marks the 16th edition of this meaningful day, serving as a constant reminder for electoral awareness and prompting voters to actively participate in elections. Why does it matter? Let’s discuss that in this blog.
What is National Voters Day?
National Voters Day marks the establishment of the Election Commission of India (ECI), just a day after the Final Signing of India’s Constitution. ECI came into existence on January 25, 1950. It honors the important institutions as well as spreads awareness about voting.
It’s not a national holiday, but a constant reminder to take part in elections, as its people’s basic right and duty to democracy. This day aims to motivate people and increase the number of registered users across the country.
Why Does Voting Matter?
India is among the biggest democracies in the world, where the citizens have the right to vote and select their leaders. Voting is the way to choose the right representative (by the people), who can work for development, address common people’s issues, and improve public services.
It is important as every vote and voter matters as they are the one which will shape the future of the country.
Why is National Voters Day Celebrated on January 25?
January 25, 2026, marks the 16th National Voters Day, as it was first observed 15 years ago. President Pratibha Patil inaugurated the first NVD on January 25, 2011, and it has been celebrated every day since then.
It was a fascinating project that transcended borders and inspired other countries like Pakistan, Bhutan, South Korea, and others to establish their own versions of the National Voters Day.
On this day, various awareness programs, oath-taking events, and voter registration drives take place across the world.
How Is It Observed?
Various activities are scheduled to celebrate this day and spread awareness about voting. Starting with the Elector Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) distributions to the newly enrolled voters (18-19 years old).
Awards are distributed by the President of India to officers and organizations that made remarkable contributions to the election management and voter education. Government officials, students, and citizens are motivated to take an NVD pledge and vote in every election ethically.
Some schools and colleges also set up debates and seminars to spread awareness among the younger generation.
Theme of 2026 National Voters Day
The theme of the 2026 National Voters Day is “My India, My Vote.” This year, the focus is to highlight the role of an individual (voter) in shaping the future of the Nation.
This year, it’s more memorable, as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive has been implemented to ensure that all eligible voters are included in the Electoral Roll.
More importantly, the ineligible names are removed to ensure fair and honest elections. Some states are already done with the SIR, while others are still exercising. It is important since four states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal, are set to go to the polls this year.
Notably, the soon-to-be-released election schedules for these states led to a delay in the IPL 2026.
PM Narendra Modi’s Note to Voters
On Sunday, January 25, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greeting to the nation on this special day. He started by saying, “Becoming a voter is an occasion of celebration!“ and talked about the inherited democratic spirit of the people of the country.
He noted that being a voter is a privilege but also a responsibility. They are the ones who determine the future of the country, so encourage the new voters and celebrate India’s vibrant democracy.
He also addressed a special letter to MY-Bharat volunteers, urging them to celebrate the enrollment of first-time voters.
