Sangeetha, the wife of renowned Tamil actor and TVK Chief Vijay, nicknamed Thalapathy, has filed a divorce petition after years of marriage. The filing was made earlier this month on the grounds of an alleged affair with an actress and mental cruelty.
Sangeetha Files for Divorce with Vijay After 28 Years of Relationship
The India Express reports that Sangeetha filed a petition for divorce at the Chengalpattu Family Court in Chennai on February 24, 2026. The divorce case has been filed under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, specifically citing Sections 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d), which cover the grounds of adultery and cruelty.
Sangeetha and Vijay have been married for 25 years now and have known each other for 3 years before that, so running a 28-year-long relationship. They registered their marriage in the UK in July 1998 and also held a ceremonial marriage on August 25, 1999, at Rajah Muthiah Mandram, Egmore, Chennai, according to Hindu customs.

Currently, she resides in the UK with their two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Saasha, while Vijay resides in Chennai for his acting and political career.
The first hearing of Sangeetha Vijay’s divorce case is on April 10, 2026. The court has asked Vijay to appear in person.
Allegations in Sangeetha – Vijay Divorce Case
Although the fans did not anticipate Sangeetha – Vijay divorce news, rumors of the separation had been circulating for a long time. Petitions mention Vijay’s emotional withdrawal from the marriage in 2021, causing trauma and neglect. Sangeetha also alleges that her husband imposed financial restrictions and restricted her free movement to assert dominance.
Sangeetha’s Demands in the Divorce Petition
Sangeetha filed the petition for the dissolution of their marriage, but there are a few demands as well. The first demand is a permanent alimony or settlement that is commensurate with Vijay’s high income and social standing. Note that Vijay’s net worth is more than ₹700 crore.
She has also asked for the right to stay at their matrimonial home until the case is finalized. Lastly, due to the high-profile nature of the family and the sensitivity of the children, Sangeetha has requested a private trial and media restraint to ensure sensitive details don’t get published.
The timing of the divorce is definitely going to be a challenge for Vijay since he has recently launched his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). With the upcoming election and his new firm Jana Nayagan facing challenges from the censor board, and divorce, Vijay is to have a turbulent year.
