Last Updated on April 24, 2026 by Khabr Bite

NGT notice IPL 2026 has suddenly become one of the biggest points to talk about this season. The IPL 2026 is in full swing and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a notice to various stadiums over water shortage issues. But the real question is whether IPL matches in cities like Delhi and Lucknow can actually be stopped?

While the fans are getting panicked, the reality is deeper, so let’s just dive in and see what exactly happened and why it matters.

NGT Notice IPL 2026: What Exactly Happened?

The National Green Tribunal has issued notices to six major cricket stadiums across India. Also, the NGT is asking them to explain why their activities should not be stopped. Here is the list of stadiums that are under notice:

  • Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi
  • Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow
  • Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur
  • Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium, Raipur
  • Dr DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai
  • Barabati Stadium, Cuttack

Why was a notice issued?

Here are the possible reasons that the notice was issued:

  • Possible use of groundwater or fresh water rather than treated water.
  • Lack of proper rainwater harvesting systems.
  • Non-compliance with earlier environmental guidelines.
  • Stadiums failed to disclose the source of water used for pitch and ground maintenance.

Also, the NGT has clearly warned that if explanations are not accurate, activities at these stadiums could be stopped.

Why Water Usage Became a Serious Issue in IPL?

At first glance, this issue may not seem like a big deal, but in India, mainly in the summer, it becomes a major environmental concern. Here are the key reasons why this issue matters:

1. Groundwater depletion: Several venues rely on borewells and groundwater extraction, which directly impacts the city’s water supply.

2. Summer water crises: Cities such as Jaipur and Delhi have already faced heavy water shortages during April-May.

3. Notices ignored: NGT marked that the stadium must use:

  • Treated sewage water (STP water)
  • Rainwater harvesting systems

Various stadiums failed to apply these properly. So, they are facing notices now.

4. Large-scale consumption: Managing international pitches needs continuing watering, mainly IPL when matches are regular.

Can IPL Matches Be Stopped in 2026?

The NGT (National Green Tribunal) has accurately asked venue authorities to explain why their activities should not be stopped, which means suspension is a possible result if rules are violated. However, officials from various stadiums, including Delhi and Raipur, have said that they are confident matches will continue and they will comply with all environmental norms.

As of now, there is no immediate order to cancel or stop matches, but the scenario depends on how well the venue responds to NGT’s concerns regarding water usage and compliance.

The Delhi District Cricket Association said it submitted the compliance report for March. RR Singh, DDCA’s spokesperson, said, “DDCA had received a notice from the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) in the year 2024 regarding the use of groundwater at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. We carried out all the compliances as required under the guidance of CGWA.”

He also said, “We have carried out all the compliances and have complied with the directions issued by the Tribunal from time to time. Unfortunately, we were not aware of the matter being taken up on 16.4.26 and therefore could not apprise the Hon’ble Tribunal about it. We are taking necessary steps to bring the correct position on the judicial record.”

There is also an official statement from the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh. As per the news Indian Express, they said, “The stadium ownership has been transferred to CSCS recently. It was previously owned by the state government. We have not received any notice so far, but as we own the stadium now, we will make sure all the compliances are done at the earliest.”

List of Stadiums Under NGT Radar

The NGT has issued notices to six major cricket stadiums across India. Out of six stadiums, four venues are directly linked with the IPL 2026. The list includes stadiums like Arun Jaitley Stadium, Ekana Cricket Stadium, Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium, Dr DY Patil Stadium, and Barabati Stadium. Among these, Jaipur, Lucknow, Delhi and Raipur are actively hosting IPL 2026 matches.

Some reports also say that venues like Hyderabad are also under broader scrutiny. It simply shows that the effect is not limited to just a few cities, but a wider compliance concern in Indian cricket infrastructure.

Impact on IPL 2026 Season

The impact on IPL 2026 is currently limited but vital to watch. As of now, the tournament schedule remains unchanged. However, various IPL venues are under scrutiny; any adverse ruling by the NGT could lead to venue changes, logistic challenges and match relocations.

Teams like Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants could be affected if their home ground faces restrictions. Also, fans can face issues related to traveling and ticket suspense. As of now, IPL 2026 will continue, but this issue may change how cricket in India is organised.
