In 2017, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selection committee decided it was time for a new captain in limited-overs cricket. In addition, they thought that Virat Kohli must take over the role from MS Dhoni, who had been leading the team for various successful years.
According to the sources, the former BCCI selector Jatin Paranjape revealed in February 2026 that MS Dhoni’s decision to quit captaincy as India’s white-ball captain in January 2017 was not fully voluntary, rather it was a “nudged” decision by the selection committee.
The selectors personally talked to Dhoni and determined their decision. Moreover, Dhoni calmly accepted their suggestion without any protest. Furthermore, he knew it was the right time for a change and hand over the responsibility to youngsters.
In addition, BCCI just wanted a formal confirmation, but Dhoni had given his verbal agreement. So, to make the decision final and official, Dhoni sent a late-night email stating that he would step down as captain. This email gave the direction to the board to announce it publicly.

Dhoni did not step away from the team completely. In addition, he promised to support Kohli as the new captain and share his experience and assist the team whenever and wherever needed. His primary focus was to see Team India succeed.
Before handing over the captaincy, Dhoni had built an outstanding legacy that led India to major wins, including the T20 World Cup in 2007, the Cricket World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013. Even after stepping down, his leadership and contributions are to be remembered and respected by players and fans.
