Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra running One UI 9 Android 17 test build

The South Korean tech giant, Samsung, has once again set the trends in the tech industry, as the brand has begun testing One UI 9. Today, it is reported to be running internal test builds for One UI 9, the next major version of Samsung’s custom Android interface, set to run on top of Android 17. Here’s why it is a big deal and when it will be released to the public.

One UI 9 Spotted on Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Today

In an X post, Tarun Vats, a Samsung expert, has reported that the brand has started testing the next major Android update for its Galaxy devices. According to him, the first internal One UI 9 test build for the Galaxy S26 series has been spotted on the server today.

The build is reported to have happened on firmware ending in BZC5 (S948BXXU1BZC5, S948BOXM1BZC5, and S948BXXU1BZC5) for the global model (SM-S948B). It was an internal test since the build size is 2.6 GB, which is not suitable for public release.

What’s New with Android 17?

SamMobile, a Samsung news account, has already downloaded a testing version of One UI 9 (S948BXXU1BZC5) and has shared quite a few details on the upcoming update. He noted that since it’s only in the early development, there are only minor changes seen in visuals.

However, he did point out that the brightness and volume controls are larger, and parental control has been moved out of the digital well-being menu. It now appears as a separate section in settings.

Early leaks also claim that there will be a glassy interface redesign, under which, there will be a more translucent and modern aesthetic for the notification shade and quick shade. This is quite different from the solid colors available in the current One UI 8.

Other rumors hint at further updates in the privacy display, adding dynamic controls to automatically trigger the feature based on location or specific app content. Also, a universal clipboard might be in development, which will allow seamless copying and pasting between Galaxy phones, tablets, and even Windows PCs.

Expected Timeline of Samsung’s One UI 9 (Android 17) Release

Samsung and bigger brands work on a fixed timeline, where their launches, updates, and others usually come on fixed time periods. According to this, it is anticipated that the Android 17-based One UI 9 is still months away from release despite the early testing.

According to experts, Android 17 will likely be released around September 2026 for the Galaxy Ultra, as it’s only in the internal testing period. The release for the 2026 foldable (Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8) may happen around July / August 2026.

Why is Samsung’s One UI 9 Update Testing Important?

Samsung has recently launched its S26 Ultra with One UI 8.5 based on Android 16. Notably, this version is still not available in the Galaxy S25 series, and yet Samsung is preparing for the One U 19 for the S26 series, making it a major update.

Why early testing?

From what is known at press time, the early testing of UI 9 just after the S26 Ultra launch is an indication that Samsung is tightening its development cycles. This might be an attempt to match the Google Android 17 cycles, expected to reach platform stability by mid-2026.
Besides, they have already launched the Beta Program of Android 17 on Pixel phones. So experts anticipate that Samsung is aiming to position its debut for a similar mid-2026, at least for the Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8.
