At the Ichikawa City Zoo near Tokyo, a baby Japanese macaque named Punch has become an emotional global story after being rejected by his mother at birth. His journey from abandonment to viral fame has touched millions worldwide.
The Early Days of Punch’s Life
Punch, also known as Panchi-kun, was born in July 2025. Just after birth, zoo staff observed that his own mother ignored him, rather than carrying, nursing, or bonding as macaque mothers normally do. Without maternal care, a newborn macaque cannot regulate its body heat, learn crucial social behaviours, or receive milk. In addition, zookeepers instantly stepped in to hand-rear him, feeding him milk and keeping him under round-the-clock care.
Why Did His Mother Reject Him?
Experts and zoo staff think there can be a few simple reasons why Punch’s mother rejected him. One of the major possible reasons is that she was a first-time mother. As per reports, new mothers do not fully know how to care for their newborns. Also, they may not understand how to hold, protect their babies accurately or feed them, which can majorly lead to rejection.
Another reason could be stress. Punch was born during a period of very hot weather and high temperatures. Moreover, environmental stress can make animals anxious. Additionally, when a mother is under stress, it can impact the bonding process between her and her baby.
There is also a natural instinct seen in some wild animals. In some cases, a mother may leave her baby if she feels the infant is weak or may not survive.

The Plush Toy That Became His Surrogate Parent
Since Punch’s mother did not care for him, the zoo staff offered him a big soft stuffed toy to hold. The toy was an orangutan plus with long, soft fur. Moreover, baby monkeys usually hold their mother tightly for warmth and comfort. On the other hand, Punch started hugging the toy the same way. He carried it around, slept with it, and held it close. The toy helped him feel safe and less alone.
Life With the Troop: Struggles & Progress
When Punch grew older, the zoo tried to introduce him to many other monkeys. At the start, it was tough for him. Some monkeys ignored him, and some adults pulled him away when he tried to play with them. It is mainly normal in monkeys as they learn social behaviour from their mothers.
