Is Dubai Still Safe After Iran's Attack

For a long time, Dubai has been a safe haven, especially for Indian citizens due to its strict regulations, zero-tax policy, and more. However, the same safe haven is under Iran’s attack, stranding hundreds of travellers, investors, and more, since the international airport has been closed since the recent airstrike. Why is it the target despite the war focusing on the Iran-Israel-US conflict, and is it still safe? Let’s discuss that in this blog.

Iran Strikes Dubai and Neighboring Emirates Amid War

Israel and the U.S. have launched a joint strike, called “Operation Epic Fury,”  on Iran, and it’s clear Iran is not stepping away. Instead, it has launched its Operation Truthful Promise IV. However, its retaliation is not limited to these countries, as it has also targeted several Gulf states, including the UAE’s Dubai.

Notably, it has already launched 137 ballistic missiles and 200-plus drone strikes on Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Although most of these were intercepted, 14 went through, causing infrastructure damage and injuring people.

According to the official figures, three people have been killed, and dozens were injured. For residents and tourists, the experience was surreal. The attack also disrupted its aviation hub; flights from Dubai’s main airports have been suspended since February 28, 2026, disrupting global connectivity between Asia, Europe, and North America.

The air-defence systems across the Gulf have also intercepted hundreds of drones and missiles.

Is Dubai not Safe Anymore?

Clearly, Iran is retaliating strongly in this Middle East war, impacting Dubai and the neighboring countries. The situation is also drawing diplomatic alarm, and the Middle East countries and Europe have called for restraint. Even India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, condemns Iran’s UAE attacks.

Moreover, the neighboring governments are warning Iran of the consequences of the war. The escalation could impact the global economy, as it would destabilize global energy markets and threaten shipping routes.

Besides, they are not the primary target, and they may have rapid recovery mechanisms, so the war may impact them as badly as it seems now. Experts allege that Dubai may remain one of the safest cities, but there’s no guarantee, since there’s a chance of escalation of the Middle Eastern conflict.

Why is Iran Attacking Dubai and Neighboring Emirates?

NDTV recently reported that Iran is justifying this attack by claiming that the countries that are hosting U.S. military assets are the legitimate targets.

Experts also hint at historical reasons behind Iran’s attack on Dubai and neighboring emirates. According to them, there’s a longstanding territorial dispute (the island of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb) between the UAE and Iran.

These islands are located near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Notably, Iran occupied them in 1971 shortly before the UAE’s formation. Although they are still under Iranian control, it is often a topic of discussion between the two.

Besides, this is not the first Iranian attack on the UAE. It backed Houthi forces that launched “Operation Hurricane Yemen,” and targeted the oil infrastructure and the Abu Dhabi International Airport.

The recent strike is also interpreted as indirect signalling toward Israel and the United States, since the UAE has designated a Major Defence Partner of the United States. Reportedly, 3,500 U.S. personnel are stationed in the UAE (Al Dhafra air base).

Overall, this attack is to pressure the Gulf states to distance themselves from Washington.
