Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Message to Tarique Rahman

Prime Minister Modi became one of the first global leaders to acknowledge the Bangladesh election result and shared a message on X for Tarique Rahman. The post reads

“I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership.”

Modi further added that India will continue to support the democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. This statement stands out since the relationship between the two countries has been on edge for some time, where Bangladesh witnessed a steep decline in border and internal security, with a rise in illegal migration.

A crack was also seen with the ongoing T20 World Cup, in which the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) withdrew their team, after the ICC refused to make changes in the venue.

This celebration message signals a reset in the India-Bangladesh elections. More importantly, it suggests that New Delhi is ready to work with the new leadership post the Bangladesh election result to ensure regional stability, despite the history of a strained relationship with the BNP.
