Australia has suffered another major setback before the T20 World Cup 2026 after superstar all-rounder and Australian Test captain Pat Cummins was ruled out due to a persistent back injury that has not fully recovered. Additionally, top-order batter Matthew Short has also missed out on the original 15-man squad for the tournament to be held in India and Sri Lanka. To fill these vacancies, left-arm fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis and batter Matthew Renshaw have been called up to strengthen the squad.

Reasons for exclusions and inclusions
Selector Tony Dodemaide explained the selections: “With Pat needing more time to recover from his back injury, Ben is a ready replacement who offers a left-arm pace option as well as dynamic fielding and late-order hitting. We believe his ability to swing the ball at a good pace, along with clever variations, will be well-suited to the conditions we expect and overall structure of the squad.” He added about Renshaw: “Matt (Renshaw) has impressed in all formats of late… As a left-hander, he (Renshaw) also offers a point of difference to the middle order batting.”
Australia’s Group B campaign

Australia will play Ireland first in Group B (which includes Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and Oman as well), at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, on February 11. The Australian team will be tested in Sri Lanka with many new additions to their team who have been selected to play on a spin-oriented pitch.
