Pakistan’s 15-player squad for the T20 World Cup has arrived in Colombo. However, as per the Pakistan government orders, Salman Ali Agha’s team will not participate in the group match against India. The squad will take a day off before participating in their first warm-up game on Wednesday against Ireland at the Sinhalese Sports Club, venue of three of the five group A matches, and their first official match on February 7 against the Netherlands.
The PCB is taking this stance following warnings from the ICC regarding the long-term implications of this decision. Host broadcaster losses for the match between India and Pakistan are estimated to be between ₹200-₹250 crore. The cost of each 10-second advertisement during the match is expected to be ₹40 lakh.

Group Stage and Tournament Stakes

Pakistan will be in a group with defending world champions India. Although they will not only play for one game, as per Agha’s comments, their goal of succeeding is to complete their year-long contract with the PCB. Due to the potential revenue loss for JioStar, they will also be looking to renegotiate their $3 billion media rights agreement with the ICC.
If the PCB were to forfeit this match against India, the team would forfeit all points. In addition, the PCB would incur significant fines. The ICC is encouraging the PCB to reconsider its decision to forfeit this match to limit further impacts on revenue and scheduling.

PCB Risks ICC Penalties

PCB’s relationship with the ICC has been compromised by directives issued by the Pakistan government. This has also created many financial problems for the PCB, such as millions of dollars’ worth of lost revenue. Salman obtained the support from all players for this challenge and focused on successfully executing the campaign for its future.
As per the recent reports, the arrival of these players indicates a commitment to logistics. However, there is still tension regarding the openers. Results from the warm-up matches will provide an indication of the team’s ability to remain focused in spite of the distractions created off the field.
