The Chennai Super Kings had a disappointing start to IPL 2026. They have faced three losses back-to-back. Despite having experienced players such as Ruturaj and Sanju, the team failed to present consistent performances. Also, Dhoni’s experience is not available for the youngsters; it can be a key reason too. Here are the top five reasons in which CSK are lacking:
Top Order Failure
Chennai Super Kings have struggled with their top-order performance in IPL 2026. Openers such as captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson have struggled. They both are quality batters, but inconsistency has been a major issue. In the past matches, they both were dismissed early. This has mainly resulted in poor power-play totals. In modern T20 Cricket, teams focus on around 60 runs in the powerplay. However, the Chennai Super Kings are not able to do that job. The lack of fierce intent and inability to build a partnership at the top is affecting the team’s momentum.

Death Overs Economy Too High

Death Over Economy is one of the major weaknesses for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026. The team conceded runs at an economy rate of around 12 to 14 runs per over in the final five overs. Noor Ahmed, one of the key bowlers for CSK, has not taken a wicket since. Anshul Kamboj lacks experience. In the last match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, they have conceded over 70+ runs in the last five overs. In close matches, this weakness has made a huge difference and it is the key reason behind CSK’s poor performance in IPL 2026.
Middle Order Dependency
CSK’s middle order in IPL 2026 lacks experience, which has created several issues in their batting lineup. One of the destructive overseas batters, Dewald Brevis, is not available due to injury and players such as Sarfaraz Khan and Karthik Sharma are still developing and have not consistently delivered under pressure. The only reliable player in this phase is Shivam Dube. When the top order fails, the middle order blunders to stabilize the innings. The absence of Ravindra Jadeja has had an effective impact on CSK in IPL 2026. He was an experienced all-rounder who could manage pressure situations.

Team Combination Issues

It is also one of the major reasons for CSK’s three consecutive losses. As many of you have seen, most of the teams have various reliable overseas batters and bowlers, but CSK is lacking in this area. Overseas players play a crucial role in IPL teams by adding experience and the ability to score well. CSK’s lineup doesn’t have an overseas player in the top order. They have Jamie Overton, but he is also not in his form. This gap has made the batting lineup look weak and dependent on Indian Players. As a result, CSK struggled to post big totals or chase targets effectively.
Inability to Build Match-Winning Partnerships
Partnership was one of the strongest points of CSK, but in IPL 2026, it has become their weakness. Due to the loss of early wickets, they are not able to develop strong partnerships. In the very first match of the CSK, they only scored 127 runs in 20 overs. The same happened during the match against RCB; there were no strong partnerships. Also, CSK has spent over 24 crore on youngsters such as Karthik Sharma and Prashant Veer, but unfortunately, they are also not in very good touch.

Three losses don’t mean that CSK is out of the tournament; they can figure things out and bounce back even stronger.
