The Karnataka government has officially shown the green light to Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium to host IPL 2026 matches after applying safety upgrades following last year’s deadly incident that took place during IPL victory celebrations 2025.
The permission has been given, but with strict crowd control measures, enhanced entry protocols, and reduced spectator capacity.
However, the venue is all set to host the opening match, the opening ceremony, and various RCB’s home games.
Approval Given After Major Safety Improvements
The Karnataka government’s approval for IPL 2026 matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium comes after months of uncertainty following the incident during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations that killed 11 fans.
After a meeting chaired by Home Minister G Parameshwara, the Expert Committee confirmed that M. Chinnaswamy can host their home ground matches with all safety measures.
The KSCA has been directed to follow the state-issued SOP during the tournament.
How the Stadium Met All Safety Requirements
The stadium has applied critical key measures of venue reopening after the incident that took place during IPL title victory celebrations 2025.
Moreover, stadiums have applied various measures such as widening entry and exit points, installing various new gates, making designated holding areas, and ensuring dedicated emergency vehicles across.
Most of the tickets will now be sold online, around 80%, and offline sales will start three days before the match.
All these steps merge with standard crowd safety practices and focus on ensuring smooth ingress and egress while avoiding overcrowding.

Impact on Local Economy and Fans
Return of IPL matches to RCB’s home ground, Chinnaswamy Stadium, is expected to bring a large number of fans together and see cricketing action.
KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad and other organisers have now underscored the stadium’s value as an iconic venue for cricket in Bengaluru.
Businesses near the stadium, including transport services, are expected to see enhanced patronage during the tournament phase.
New Safety Rules for Spectators
Fans will enter through a two-gate system with metal detectors, restricted to the link road and Cubbon Road access points, and guided to colour-coded seating zones.
Moreover, holding areas, improved metro services, and widened gates focus on saving overcrowding and ensuring quick medical emergency services/responses.
What Lies Ahead for the Stadium
If the upcoming edition of IPL goes well under the new safety precautions, the stadium can be used better for high-profile games and other major events.
On the other hand, if any lapses occur in crowd control and safety compliance, authorities may impose further restrictions or limit abilities for future events.
For the safety of the crowd, organisers may discover hybrid use approaches, balancing event frequency with stringent safety oversight to manage readiness and public confidence.
