Tata Nexon 2026

Last Updated on April 9, 2026 by Yash Saini

A covered-up test version of Tata Nexon was spotted running on Indian roads. This led to a lot of speculation in the automobile industry about whether Tata is gearing up for a complete makeover of the Nexon, or they are just introducing a new engine variant.

In terms of sales, Nexon has been leading India’s compact SUV segment for quite some time and therefore, any change in it would be major news for the lakhs of buyers across the country. Considering that the competition in this segment is becoming more and more challenging by the day, Tata cannot afford to let Nexon go without any difference for too long.

What Did the Spy Shots Show?

The test vehicle was covered completely with a vinyl-style wrap so as to keep the changes under wraps. However, even after a detailed scrutiny, it is evident that the outline of the vehicle, the front and rear light fittings, as well as the wheels, are exactly the same as the Nexon that is available for sale today. The overall dimensions and height, very likely, are also the same.

The presence of a tailpipe in the rear of the vehicle is the most important aspect here. This basically means that the car must be running on one of the traditional fuels (petrol, diesel or CNG), and that it is not an electric car.

So the question remains: if from the outside, everything looks the same, why go through all the trouble of wrapping it up? This is, in fact, the very question that everyone is trying to find out.

Two Main Possibilities

Possibility 1: A New CNG + Auto Gear Option Is Coming

The top reason behind this test vehicle could be that Tata is planning to launch a CNG trim with an auto transmission. In fact, till now Nexon has not been sold with this combo.

Presenting all the powertrains that the 2026 Tata Nexon offers as of now:

At present, the CNG model is only available with a manual transmission. That is a big selling point for many, especially the ones who drive their cars mostly in cities, as an automatic transmission is the easiest to operate in heavy traffic conditions where the vehicle is constantly stopped and started. Tata, on the other hand, after having introduced the CNG + auto combinations in the Tiago, Tigor, and Punch, is most probably going to be the Nexon, after all, that step for them.

Fuel TypePowerTorqueGearbox
Petrol (1.2L Turbo)118 bhp178 NmManual / Auto (4 options)
CNG (Turbo)99 bhp170 NmManual only
Diesel (1.5L)113 bhp260 NmManual / Auto
Electric (30 kWh)127 bhp215 NmAuto
Electric (45 kWh)143 bhp215 NmAuto

Tata’s decision to go with a turbo engine for Nexon’s CNG setup as opposed to the regular (non-turbo) ones used in Maruti Brezza and Hyundai Venue is one of the reasons why its CNG version is better than most competitors in the market. That is because the aforementioned models, when running on CNG, suffer greatly from power loss, something which is not so much a problem with Nexon. Apart from that, it has smaller CNG cylinders which means even more boot (storage) space can be saved.

If Tata decides to release the CNG + auto variant, then the Nexon will stand out among all cars in India as the only vehicle offering four fuel types petrol, CNG, diesel, and electric within a single model, with automatics being available for almost all fuel types.

Possibility 2: A Small Facelift (Update) Could Also Be Coming

Another possibility is that Tata Motors is planning a facelift for the car. In automotive terms, a facelift means that a car model receives an updated styling and increased features, but essentially the same model is carried forward.

People who believe that a facelift is in the pipeline, argue that it is unlikely that Tata Motors would have wrapped the entire car only for a gearbox test. When car manufacturers do full-body covers, they are mostly intent on hiding the design changes.

The current Nexon went on sale in September 2023. By the time late 2026 comes along, the car will be nearly 3 years old and automobile manufacturers often refresh their models around this period to maintain customer interest.

A minor refresh without a major overhaul seems to be the most realistic outcome if we judge by the spy photos:

  • Exterior: The overall shape remains unchanged, but the camouflaged test mule reveals updates like a new DRL signature, revised headlamps, and sharper front-end design indicating a subtle refresh.
  • Interior: Use of better materials, more feature options, and probably a more advanced screen system.
  • Safety and Tech: Introduction of new driver assistance features and a wider range of connected car options could be possible.

Why Does This Matter? The Nexon Is a Big Deal

The Tata Nexon is not just a widely recognized name; it regularly leads India’s car sales charts month after month. In March 2026, the Tata Nexon made a remarkable achievement as it was able to sell more than 14, 058 units, which catapulted it among the best-selling SUVs in India. It shares the showroom floor with Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Maruti Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Skoda Kyalq, and Nissan Magnite.

Besides its popularity, Tata Nexon EV has also achieved the milestone of over 1 lakh total sales, which clearly indicates that the vehicle is loved by people irrespective of the fuel type.

According to the reports, current prices of 2026 Tata Nexon prices start at Rs 7.37 lakh and go up to Rs 14.15 lakh (ex-showroom). The CNG model has indeed been doing very well in the market as CNG is significantly cheaper to run as compared to petrol or diesel. The addition of an automatic gearbox to the CNG model will definitely make it one of a kind overall.

Recently Tata Motors recorded a 47% year-on-year sales increase, and the Nexon is an important reason for that. Updated and changeable features will always be top priorities for them.

What Can We Expect Next?

Combining all the pieces, here is what seems probable:

  • There is no doubt that CNG + Auto gearboxes are in the pipeline. The rationale is very compelling, and Tata has done this on smaller cars before.
  • One cannot write off the possibility of a minor facelift completely. Given a full-body wrap, it may be for an engine test. So, perhaps some cabin or feature updates are also being considered.
  • The launch could happen towards the end of 2026; however, Tata has not provided any confirmation yet.
