IPL 2026 captains meeting interaction

Just two days before the IPL 2026 starts, the captain and BCCI officials sat down in Mumbai on March 25 for a routine pre-season meeting.  The meeting was attended by all 10 captains. This time, the meeting featured the entire Indian set of captains, which added a different dynamic to the discussion.

Javagal Srinath and Nitin Menon, head of the BCCI’s match referees and India’s representative on the ICC Elite umpires’ panel, respectively, addressed the captains during the meeting. In addition, out of 10 teams, 9 were having their regular captains, while Ishan Kishan represented Sunrisers Hyderabad in place of Pat Cummins. The major discussion was the Impact player rule and ball changes after 10 overs.

Impact Player Rule

As per Outlook India, the biggest discussion was on the Impact player rule, but BCCI has already extended it till 2027, even after various captains reportedly shared their concerns about how it impacts team balance.

As per the sources, BCCI has already extended it till 2027, so it can be reviewed after the 2027 edition.

Before the meeting, Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel spoke about the impact of the rule on Monday in his opening media interaction of IPL 2026.

He said: “I don’t like this rule as I am an all-rounder myself. Earlier, we used to pick all-rounders for this role (batting and bowling). Now the team management goes with a particular batter or bowler, they say why do we need an all-rounder? Being an all-rounder myself, I don’t like it, but at the same time, rules are rules. We have to follow them. But personally, I don’t like it.”

Before the meeting, Former BCCI president and Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly has also spoken about the Impact player rule and India’s recent dominance. As per PTI, he said, “Impact player rule is here to stay. When I became the president of the BCCI, the Impact Player had already come in, so it was before that, so it is here to stay. Someone will like it, someone will not, but still, the better players will prevail.

When asked about India’s recent dominance, he says, “India’s dominance will continue, the talent this country has, this is going to continue for years to come, in T20, white ball formats for sure, and I am sure these young boys will give as much value to Test cricket as it deserves, and become quality players in that format as well.”

Ball Change after 10 Overs and Training Clarity

Another critical point was the dew factor; sometimes teams have been dealing with it for years. The current rule allows bowlers to change the ball after the 10th over and manage wet conditions. According to Outlook India, sources say, there is a heavy dew in the second innings, so the current rules stand.

There was also a suggestion from one of the captains to allow ball change in the first innings, but it didn’t really get support. According to the officials, the reason was simple: dew mainly impacts the second innings, so there’s no need to change the rule.

There was also a discussion on the new rules related to training. The practice session will not be allowed on match days. If a team finishes their training early, the opposition is now allowed to use their wicket. In short, there was a reminder around over-rate penalties, bat size checks, and general code of conduct, but it was vital to avoid chaos once the tournament began.
