Hardik Pandya wrapped in the Indian tricolour during post-match celebration at the stadium

Indian cricket star Hardik Pandya has landed in a legal case following a historic T20 World Cup victory. A complaint has been filed at Shivaji Nagar police station in Bengaluru against Hardik Pandya, saying that he disrespected the tricolour during the post-victory celebrations at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

The complaint was filed by a Pune-based advocate, Wajed Khan, who says that the Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya violated the provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.

He also said, ‘According to Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act, we should respect the national flag. Hardik Pandya had tied the national flag to his back. He was so lost in the celebration that he was lying with his girlfriend, wearing the national flag.

When I filed the complaint at the Shivaji Nagar police station, they told me the incident occurred there, not here. So I told them the national flag is a symbol of the entire nation, and we can file a complaint with the Shivaji Nagar Police. They have now accepted my complaint and provided me with a copy. Let’s see what happens next. I have demanded legal actions against him.”

The Flag Code of India

The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act strictly prohibits the Indian national flag as a portion of the costume or uniform of any description. In addition, it also forbids the flag from touching the ground or being used in such a way that shows disrespect. If found guilty, such a crime can lead to a fine or imprisonment for up to three years.

As per reports, neither Hardik Pandya nor the BCCI has issued an official statement regarding the police complaint.
